Successive meeting of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO was held
On October 17, 2025, the successive meeting of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
The meeting was attended by the relevant Deputy Chairmen of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO, as well as the leadership and representatives of relevant ministries and agencies.
Opening the meeting, Minister of Foreign Affairs R. Meredov noted that developing cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a priority vector of the country’s foreign policy. It was emphasized that Turkmenistan’s engagement with UNESCO has been actively expanding in recent years, encompassing new areas such as climate change, water resources management, and the introduction of digital technologies.
During the meeting, a report on the activities of the National Commission for the period from January to September 2025 was presented, as well as proposals for improving the work discussed.
The agenda included presentations on the implementation of the UNESCO International Geoparks Programme in Turkmenistan, which provides for the creation of geoparks encompassing natural, historical, and cultural sites, as well as on the work of UNESCO Clubs operating in the country.
Proposals for improving coordination between relevant agencies and implementing new joint initiatives were discussed.
Meeting participants were informed about the ongoing work to nominate Turkmenistan for the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO for the period 2026–2030.
Following the meeting, priority objectives for the rest of 2025 were identified and specific recommendations for further strengthening the cooperation between Turkmenistan and UNESCO were addressed.
